Winterville's iconic train depot: it's been a part of downtown ever since our founding, right?

Guess again: the building sitting astride Main Street and the Firefly Trail isn't our first railroad depot; it isn't even our second. No, our depot was built in 1903 and is at least the third structure to serve our town in that capacity.

So what happened to the first one? That's what we're going to find out, and we want you to be a part of it.
We hope you join us July 28 - August 1 for our first-ever archaeology summer camp! For one week, individuals age 12 and older as well as family groups of any age will conduct a real archaeological excavation, with real stakes and real discoveries.

Participants will:
-
Learn the basic principles of archaeology;
-
Identify and select their own dig site;
-
Excavate the area layer by layer, identifying and documenting artifact finds before they are removed; and
-
Clean and analyze what they have uncovered before using critical thinking to deduce what their finds might mean for the story of Winterville. Who knows - you might be the person to find something that changes everything we think we know about our town's early years!

The excavation will be led by Winterville's Cultural Heritage Director and assisted by an experienced group of historians and educators. This same team previously conducted excavations at the site of Winterville's original commercial row as well as throughout the recent Blacksmith Shop reconstruction, and is excited to pass on their training and knowledge to everyone who attends!

To keep the camp as accessible as possible, we're offering competitive rates for this week-long adventure:

Individual attendees: $200.00
Family Group: $300.00 for the first two members, $100 for each additional member

Each attendee will receive an archaeology equipment starter set to keep!

Please note that the camp hours run from 8:00am to 3:00pm daily. Lunch will be provided on Friday, August 1 as we celebrate the last day of camp!
Attendance is limited, so register soon to end your summer with a truly unique experience!
